Appearance:

Ami's short, slightly wavy hair is naturally light blue, and her eyes a distinctive shade and hue of the same color. She dresses very conservatively as a rule, wears glasses, and does not use makeup.

At times, Ami's often troubled nature also manifests itself in her appearance. At these times, she chooses dressier or more revealing clothing, applies striking makeup, and looks quite different though it is still obviously the same person.

Personality:

Ami Mizuno is kind, gentle, wise beyond her years, and a determined friend. She is able to be remarkably honest with herself about her feelings, motives, etc. Bred to politeness and formality, she can be difficult to get to know. Her 'lecture mode' can especially seem more like something expected of a parent or authority figure than peer, and the other students generally believe Ami to be snobby as a result of her gifted intelligence. In turn, she generally responds nicely anyway but internalizes a certain sadness as a result. Ami also has a very strong sense of responsibility; she will own up to and hold herself accountable for her actions and believes that apologies and forgiveness are important, but do not change or excuse wrongdoing.

While Ami likes studying and enjoys it (her favorite food is sandwiches so that she can eat them while reading, and she arrives at school half an hour early each day to also have time to read), at times she feels constrained by the expectation that it is all she will or should devote herself to. Inexperienced in romance, she sometimes thinks romantically - though it usually comes second to logic and only rarely breaks through.

Competitiveness admittedly drives Ami; she finds nothing so thrilling or passionate as having a rival. In her good moods, this is very friendly and she strives to inspire her opponents to reach their potential. She has even once walked away from a crucial chess championship back in Japan for unknown reasons, suggesting that while she enjoys competition, it is not everything. In her darker moods, it is. She becomes hyper-competitive and driven to win almost as if by desperation. It may be that some of this comes from stress; Ami's Equation is as follows:

She is also very lonely, her intelligence and seriousness often leaving her without many - if any - friends. At times, this sense of isolation has caused her to lash out with horrible consequences to herself and others. In those moods, she is almost wholly heartless - if she is ruled by water, she becomes ice. During these times, many of the students and even faculty have mentioned fearing her.

Abilities/Strengths:

Ami is incredibly brilliant, particularly in her favorite and best subject: Math. She consistently scores perfect marks on national exams as well, which makes her school proud. As an offshoot of this, Ami can be quite clever and quick-witted.

She is all but unbeatable at swimming - water is clearly her home - and chess is a close second; it is confirmed that Ami has played and beaten the junior national champion back in Japan. In fact, she has won every chess match she has ever played prior to White Ridge except for one she walked away from for personal reasons.

As expected; reading, chess, and swimming are also Ami's main hobbies.

Weaknesses:

Ami largely brings her sense of isolation on herself. Accustomed to being somewhat shunned at school, she is suspicious of motive from the start when approached, and is quick to take private offense if brushed off.

Strangely and inexplicably, Ami is actually outright allergic to love letters; she will turn red not simply from blushing in embarrassment but from an actual, painful rash upon receiving one - revealed in White Ridge when an anonymous one was sent to her. This is still very little known as she tried to pass off the allergy as to potentially something in the particular ink, cologne, or paper used.

History:

Ami Mizuno grew up in Tokyo, Japan in the Jyuuban (Tenth) District. Though her parents divorced while she was still young, she respects and admires them both greatly for different things, and even hopes to follow her mother's footsteps as a doctor; her father is a regionally well-known painter.

It wasn't until Junior High when Ami met Usagi Tsukino that the girl really had friends at all, and it was for their sake that Ami consistently refused to consider better-caliber schools, instead preferring to be where she was, finally, liked. Eventually, the pressure to look after her future by considering a more prestigious school - and to study abroad, which would perfect her English - grew strong enough that she was sent to White Ridge instead of a German school her mother had also researched.
